Pathway to a Career in Traffic Management

*training courses are only available in Christchurch

Step 1: Temporary Traffic Management (TTM) Worker course with practical component.

This allows you to work on the road from 21 April 2021 if you do not already hold a current or expired TC / STMS qualification. This is a prerequisite for the TMO course.

The TTM Worker course will be around four hours in the classroom, plus four hours on the road.

On completion, US 31958 - Explain the role of and operate as a TTM worker on the worksite under temporary traffic management will be awarded.

Step 2: Traffic Management Operative (TMO) course.

If you have an expired TC qualification or have completed the TTM Worker, this is for you.

After completing the TMO course, you become a TMO Non-Practicing.

On completion, US 31959 - Demonstrate knowledge of temporary traffic management will be awarded.

Step 3: Practical component of your TMO course.

After completing the practical component, you become a TMO Practicing.

On completion, US 31960 - Maintain the worksite under temporary traffic management will be awarded.

The cost of completing this practical component varies, depending on how many hours of training you would need with a mentor and how many hours you would need with an assessor.

This is a pre-requisite for the STMS course, if you do not hold a current TC qualification.

Step 4:  Universal Site Traffic Management Specialist Non-Practicing (STMS-NP) course.

The two day Universal STMS course provides an introduction for those who want to gain their Category A / B / C or STMS Mobile qualification.

The one and a half day Category A & B add on modules are usually scheduled straight after the Universal course. There is also a Category C add on module for those who are interested.

On completion, US 31961 - Explain the requirements for the worksite under temporary traffic management and US 31962 -  Explain the requirements for the worksite under temporary traffic management for a road environment as defined in CoPTTM will be awarded.

Step 5: Practical component of your STMS course.

After completing the practical component, you become a STMS Practicing of that category.

On completion, US 31963 - Operate as a practicing Site Traffic Management Specialist (STMS) on a road environment as defined in CoPTTM will be awarded.

The cost of completing this practical component varies, depending on how many hours of training you would need with a mentor and how many hours you would need with an assessor.
