Pathway to a Career in Traffic Management

Step 1: Temporary Traffic Management (TTM) Worker course with practical component.
This allows you to work on the road from 21 April 2021 if you do not already hold a current or expired TC / STMS qualification. This is a prerequisite for the TMO course.
The TTM Worker course will be around four hours in the classroom, plus four hours on the road.
On completion, US 31958 - Explain the role of and operate as a TTM worker on the worksite under temporary traffic management will be awarded.
Step 2: Traffic Management Operative (TMO) course.
If you have an expired TC qualification or have completed the TTM Worker, this is for you.
After completing the TMO course, you become a TMO Non-Practicing.
On completion, US 31959 - Demonstrate knowledge of temporary traffic management will be awarded.
Step 3: Practical component of your TMO course.
After completing the practical component, you become a TMO Practicing.
On completion, US 31960 - Maintain the worksite under temporary traffic management will be awarded.
The cost of completing this practical component varies, depending on how many hours of training you would need with a mentor and how many hours you would need with an assessor.
This is a pre-requisite for the STMS course, if you do not hold a current TC qualification.
Step 4: Universal Site Traffic Management Specialist Non-Practicing (STMS-NP) course.
The two day Universal STMS course provides an introduction for those who want to gain their Category A / B / C or STMS Mobile qualification.
The one and a half day Category A & B add on modules are usually scheduled straight after the Universal course. There is also a Category C add on module for those who are interested.
On completion, US 31961 - Explain the requirements for the worksite under temporary traffic management and US 31962 - Explain the requirements for the worksite under temporary traffic management for a road environment as defined in CoPTTM will be awarded.
Step 5: Practical component of your STMS course.
After completing the practical component, you become a STMS Practicing of that category.
On completion, US 31963 - Operate as a practicing Site Traffic Management Specialist (STMS) on a road environment as defined in CoPTTM will be awarded.
The cost of completing this practical component varies, depending on how many hours of training you would need with a mentor and how many hours you would need with an assessor.

To complete the NZ Certificate of Temporary Traffic Worksite Management on the NZ Qualifications Framework, you must register your National Student Number (NSN) number with us, so NZQA can award you the unit standards as you complete the courses.
If you are planning on being a TTM Mentor, TTM Assessor and / or TTM Trainer, you must complete this certification and related unit standards. Otherwise it is optional to complete this certificate.
